Cern plans gentle restart for LHC in November

Link: http://news.zdnet.co.uk/emergingtech/0,1000000183,39710077,00.htm

This is a quote from zdnet published 10. August 2009.
'The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (Cern) plans to restart its Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in November at a level it says will not overtax the machinery behind the giant particle physics experiment, which has experienced a year of setbacks.'

And:
'After a significant data sample has been collected running the LHC at 3.5TeV per beam, Cern said it would move toward 5TeV and, at the end of 2010, would introduce lead ions for the first time.'

And:
'Then it will be time to shut down the collider once again to prepare the machinery to run at 7TeV. According to Cern's glossary "1TeV is about the energy of motion of a flying mosquito. What makes the LHC so extraordinary is that it squeezes energy into a space about a million million times smaller than a mosquito."'

Giant Particle Collider Struggles

Link: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/04/science/space/04collide.html?ref=science

This is a quote from an article in the New York Times, published 3rd August 2009 by Dennis Overbye:
'The biggest, most expensive physics machine in the world is riddled with thousands of bad electrical connections. Many of the magnets meant to whiz high-energy subatomic particles around a 17-mile underground racetrack have mysteriously lost their ability to operate at high energies.'

And later:
'But some physicists admit to being impatient. “I’ve waited 15 years,” said Nima Arkani-Hamed, a leading particle theorist at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. “I want it to get up running. We can’t tolerate another disaster. It has to run smoothly from now.”'

And:
'“We could be doing physics at the end of November,” he said in July, before new vacuum leaks pushed the schedule back a few additional weeks.

It’s not the design energy of the machine, but it’s 4 times higher than the Tevatron,” he said.'

LHC is down

'At the CERN a machine is built, with which for the first time in the history of mankind black holes could be produced on Earth. The amazing is, nobody believes that that is dangerous.'
Quote from an interview with Professor Dr. Otto E. Rossler

CERN's LHC is currently down and should be launched again - after substantial repair work - in September 2009 according to latest available information.

The Press is fairly quiet currently concerning the LHC and as a consequence so is notepad
.

As - and if - the LHC will be started again in September 2009 Press and other activity should pick up again and so will notepad's publication intensity.

Is this a healthy situation?

We do not know. Maybe it would be better to have created enough publicity and know-how in the population to force CERN to conduct a additional, public, broad and independant safety study. Maybe that would make the LHC safer.

Maybe the LHC - and humanity - would profit from such additional LHC safety.

But ... neither public nor press seem to have been sufficiently impressed to take the safety issues voiced by some serious enough to demand further investivation into the LHC safety.

notepad is quite proud to have been one of the very first publications in Switzerland and in Europe to take up the LHC safety concerns.

And notepad plans to keep informing on the LHC.

This is a quote from techradar published 10.02.09:
'Scientists at CERN have revealed that the restart of the Large Hadron Collider has been put back to September.

This is the second time that the re-launch has been delayed.

Originally, the LHC was set for a November 2008 restart but this was shunted to July of this year. '

New LHC Chief Urges Caution

Link: http://news.softpedia.com/news/New-LHC-Chief-Urges-Caution-102838.shtml

This is a quote from Softpedia published 26.01.09:
'Rolf-Dieter Heuer, CERN director-general, has told the Swiss newspaper Sonntag that he plans to exercise extreme caution in turning the machine on again, and that he will require foreign experts to double- and triple-check the entire system before the particle accelerator starts functioning anew. "I want to be sure that everything works. So I'll also let an external group make additional checks on the accelerator," he explains.'
